Economic Trends and Outlook

香港經濟增長、通脹及工資 — 理論與展望

  • Hong Kong Economic Growth, Inflation, and Wages – Theory and Outlook

Hong Kong has long been renowned as the freest economy in the world, which has helped attract top international talents. Before COVID-19, global professionals could freely work in Hong Kong, after receiving a visa. Our thriving economy has also meant that workers can expect a good salary. Pay trends should largely be in line with an economy’s growth and inflation prospects, in addition to the local labour force conditions. However, in recent decades, it has been suggested that growth and wages are decoupling. Is this analysis accurate, and what is the outlook for growth and wages in Hong Kong?

eMPF Platform: Opening Up a New Era for the MPF System

積金易平台: 開啟強積金制度的新一頁

Few would dispute that fintech will be the power engine for the development of the financial sector in the foreseeable future. This will also be true in the realm of the MPF System.

As tasked by the HKSAR Government, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) is now developing at full steam the eMPF Platform which will standardise, streamline, and automate the MPF scheme administration processes. It represents the most sweeping reform of the MPF System to date, aiming to bring a faster, simpler, better, and more economical experience to all parties involved, as well as create room for fee reduction and render other reforms possible.

With the onslaught of COVID-19, it is obvious how an economy's digital capability could impact its resilience. Social distancing made businesses grind to a halt if they were not already digitally connected to customers, banks, and payment platforms. The pandemic is a wake-up call that accelerates the digital transformation process, expediting the public's adoption of the eMPF Platform.

Mr Cheng will share with the audience the vision of the MPFA on the development and operation of the eMPF Platform, the key benefits it will bring to employers, HR practitioners and employees, and the urgency to embrace it in the post-COVID world.
